Stop petting and start carrying pieces of his food in your pocket. When he is around throw pieces of food towards him. Don't try to touch him. Let him approach you and initiate anything. After a few days try to feed him from your hand. Don't touch him. Let him smell you. If he sits or stand next to you then you can try to petting, gently and slowly. If you move too fast it will upset him. If he gets startled when petting just let him move away from you. Eventually he will get over this.

I like the advice given so far. Let me just add that I wish you well! We had a dog first, then got a kitten, and no matter how sweet the dog was (she put up with a lot from kitty over the years!) the cat would NOT be friends. Eventually, they learned to co-exist, but, alas, were never friends. Now that the dog has passed on, the cat is in seventh heaven, being the only pet in the house!

Don't try to pet him but throw him a dog treat instead, and talk to him, this way in a few weeks, or days, he'll stop the growling and look for the treat instead. You see you've moved in on his territory and he's just warding you off but the treats should make him more tolerant. Good luck

You need to carry steak or hotdogs in your pocket at all times. Totally ignore the dog. He will be overcome by the food smells and will be nudging your pockets and wanting a treat in no time. Some dogs this may take a few days, but be patient it will happen. Hold a few pieces of the treat in your fist and he will nudge at it wanting it. Open fist and let him have a taste. Keep ignoring him this whole time, don't look at him. In a day or two he will realize you are a friend.

Yes there is. Stay away from him, don't try to pet him, or extend your hand to him. He will in time come to you. You have moved into his territory. You are the intruder. Dogs are protective of their environment and territorial. I suspect this is an older dog that has not been neutered. If I'm right, you would be wise to avoid him until he shows acceptance of you. You don't want to get bit. Good luck.

Totally ignore him. That way you pose no threat to the dog, who will probably approach you in his own time. Then ask the owner if you can give the dog the occasional edible treat. Soon the dog will be delighted to see you.

do you have a strong, confident sort of air about you? a dominant sort of personality?
this dog is probably the alpha dog in this house (which probably means he's terribly spoiled and without even realizing his "people" are completely submissive to him and he feels that he is completely in charge of his "pack") and as a result he's probably threatened by you and trying to dominate you.
either that you or you have a demon spirit dwelling inside of you. dogs can sense those things.
=)
you can try doing those things like coming around him gradually with snacks and what not, but in the end he'll probabbly end up just "dominating" you, which is the way he sees it.

He is obviously wary of you because you have encroached on his patch. try giving him a few doggy chocs or a chew or something every day when you come through the door to gain his trust. Talk to him in a kind, gentle voice and he will learn to trust you.

I know you are tempted to give him a laxitive chocolate but don't. He is afraid of you. Give him little tit bits, a biscuit or doggie drops or something. he will think of food (not you for dinner) every time he sees you. Food is pleasent so seeing you will spark a feeling of pleasure and youi wil become friends.
Best of luck with, Fang

he just needs to get use to you. dont try to pet him or pick him up at first but after a few days he will realize you are here to stay and that you mean no harm. try feeding him treats(especially th ones he likes) throwing a toy for him to play with and gradually petting him. at first he is just being territorial but will soon become your friend.good luck!
