Satistics show several countries drink more alcohol than Americans. Germany, Czech Republic, and Belgium all drink more beer per head than Americans. Other examples exists.

Toatal amounts sold is simple math. There are more Americans than the populations of most countries. So if each person purchased a small amount of alcohol each year the total would be high. But per hear amounts comparable to many nations. That being said Americans love to over-do everything.

From food and alcohol consumption to sports Americans want it all. Some anthropoligists suggest it is the "can't have syndrom." When a child is told they cannot have a cookie(biscuit) he/she is more determined to get the cookie. Americans are this way. We are told that we cannot have alcohol legally until the age of 21. So we set out to have it.
Americans are a tribe that consistes of all the worlds peoples. Most of the collective heritages are rot with starvation and a fight to survive, food was always scarce. And although this has changed to the better over the past century no country has had more success than the USA in providing food for it's population. And yet again we must have it.
Drinking is also a form of celebrating the great success of the USA. The nation that welcomed nationalties from around the world have collectively built the world's most properous nation. And in doing so freed, educated, and gave strength to so many other nations. {examples: American with Britian taught the Germans & Japanease about modern government and economics after WWII}

Americans drink more than other nations (only in certain comparisons) because we enjoy expressing ourselves with total freedom.

Perhaps if we took more time off from work and relaxed more (as other nations do) we would drink a bit more moderatly.

Until then-Enjoy your beers America.

In fairness the Russians outdo us.

But I think it is largely cultural. Also, American law regulates alcohol content, so most beverages are at reasonably safe levels.

Not all Americans drink that much. Too many do, and it does cause problems.

It's best you check out some statistics on Germany, Russia, France, Holland...and too many others to mention, before you go thinking Americans drink too much.

Relative to what? There are a lot of countries where alcohol is more a part of the culture than in the US. Russia (vodka), France (wine), UK (pubs), Japan (sake, beer), and Mexico (tequila) come to mind.

I hate to be stereotypical, but this is what my friend tells me. Some Americans have troubled lives and prefer to drink their troubles away. In college, partying with alcohol is considered socializing. In high school, alcohol is the "rebel" thing to do next to smoking.

Gee why Americans drink so much?
I think & have experienced that.
With so much we have here at our disposble & everything being at our fingertips we have a tendancy to lean toward being bored from all the instant gratification so we drink.
As I once heard " I drink therefore I am"
