Penance, confession, reconciliation. All three words show forth an aspect of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Penance is the little thing we do to try to show God that we are really sorry. Confession is telling our sins to Christ in the person of the priest. Reconciliation is being united or reconciled with God and the Church for our sins, which separate us. Especially the serious or mortal sins.
The priest acting in "persona Christe" gives God absolution. If you read the new testament God established the Church as his instrument on earth.

Confession. this usually happens in the confessional box but I once had confession face to face which I found most disturbing, I don't think I ever went to confession again, I was able to see how bored the priest looked on hearing my banal minor sins, I felt I should make some exciting sins up or something.

That is called confession by the catholics but it is not needed to confess any sin to the priest. You should confess your sin to the very person whom you have committed a sin and directly to God. It is God who will forgive a sin but not the priest

It's called confession, but you don't need to go to a priest to confess your sins. You just confess them to Jesus, and ask Him to forgive you your sins, and wash you clean. Then it's done!!! He's the only one who needs to hear them, not the priest!
