Christians won't convince atheists to change their views/beliefs and vice versa. Only something extreme, like being the sole and unharmed survivor of a plane crash could possibly make me start doubting my atheist stance (well, even then..). And it seems to me that perhaps only a Holocaust-like experience could shake most Christians' faith.

So what's the point of arguing then? Is it some sort of tribal warfare where we're trying to prove our group's superiority?

They definitely won't convince each other here, since so many fanatics from both sides end up playing "who's got the bigger wanker" all the time.

I personally debate here for a few reasons:

1) I have a fear of public speaking, and here I can just delete when I stutter;
2) I want to learn from people on both sides;
3) It challenges me to find the reasons that I believe what I believe;
4) There's gotta be some responsible Christians out here for the atheists that are actually interested in intelligent conversation to debate with (I'm putting you in that category for now, by the way!);
5) There's gotta be someone here to set a positive example of Christianity, to compensate at least a little for the ignorant Bible-thumper who is more interested in afore-mentioned wanker contest than actually ministering;
6) There's gotta be someone here to shut thumper up when he gets out of line, and atheists just seem to set him off more;
7) I personally think that the existence of a God (not necessarily the Christian God, but some form of God) is the most rational explanation for the universe, and I am curious as to why atheists believe what they believe.

I argue with an atheist; and atheist argues with me; an agnostis observes that argument. I know that I will probably never convert you, and that you will likely never convert me. But if I do a better job of selling my belief than you do your belief, then I may have won over that wobbler. That is my audience: not the believer, not the adamant non-believer, but the one who is looking for the answer that I believe I have.

And that is what I am doing here.

If you say so, but OTHERS have changed their mind because they weren't so set in their ways as to say others could NOT convince them. They listened with a teachable spirit and therefore, found truth. If one says they won't be convinced even with proof, well, you are right, it is senseless to debate them, of course. I'm glad you are honest by using the word DOUBT. It indicates you recognize that atheism is also a religion. It takes faith to believe that in the face of an intricately designed universe, there's no designer.

Well? I'm here as the result of a court order stipulation in granting my early release. My parole officer requires monthly documentation of my R&S participation. I really don't want to be ordered back to the Joint.

I find it stimulating and sometimes downright hilarious. I always leave this place with a smile on my face and learn something new in the meantime.
