If its pretty red or hurts more then normal, then it may be infected. But remember to just keep washing your belly with the soap that your piercer said to use, and try not to touch your piercing at all, cos this will most likely course infection.
But this could also be cos the ring that your using on your belly button mite not be made of the right metal, in this case it could be cheap silver or gold etc. this normally happens when you get your piercing done the cheap way. But then again this may not even be an infection at all, it could just be cos you only got it pierced a week ago, and is still in a healing process, which means it could be red for a little while longer till it fully heals.
But just to be sure, see your piercer about it, and ask what you can do to make sure it doesn't get anymore infected.

What makes you think its infected? If you are certain it is, go with 2 salt water soaks a day, 1/4 of a teaspoon of salt to a cup of hot water, (Let it cool a bit obviously) You may be having a bad reaction to the soap, Id say try not using if for a couple of days, see if it settles down a little. Avoid touching it at all costs, and try not to catch it and knock it about, they really dont like it :) But remember, its only been a week, all piercings take time to heal and thats generally all it needs. Good luck and post back if it doesnt get any better.

Just keep doing what the piercer told you to do. You may want to go back and visit them and show them and ask them what they think. Belly button piercings itch like hell though when you first get them done so I suggest not scratching it because bacteria from your nails could infect the piercing.

don't use anything harsh like hydrogen peroxide- it's an open wound, and it's really not going to help
it'll generally be red and sore initally, keep it clean with salt water soaks, don't play with it at all, and go to your piercer if you have further problems with it. if it's infected, don't take it out
