you would apologize if she notices anything if not just ignore it. Passing wind is a normal human action and quite often it can't be controlled. Not all of them smell bad. You could shrug your shoulders and screw up your face and give a silly smile....

However, true etiquette would prescribe that everyone, including you, simply pretends it didn't happen.

In a private home with people whom you know, you would of course say, "excuse me". However, in a public situation, a public apology would be impractical unless you know just how far the odour has travelled. :)

Not necessarily at the grocery store, but anywhere else, when I fart I blame it on the rare species of farting (and VERY fast) bats that are indigenous to our area. :D I usually say, "OMG--did you see it? Where'd he go??"
