All you need is WordPad buddy! It's free with windows, if all you want to do is write. Just go to start -> all programs -> accessories -> wordpad.

If you need to do more advanced word processing, like things Microsoft Word does, then yes by all means OpenOffice is an awesome product.

If you're just wanting to write books though, you don't need all that power, you just need to be able to write words!

People get put off just using wordpad etc. because it comes free with windows they think it must be useless, but I use it to write all the time because I move from computer to computer as I travel and I can't always know office will be on there, so I use wordpad because I know it's on every windows pc.

Microsoft Works has some interesting functionality, but ultimately, I feel that Microsoft Office just does much more than Works. However, if you are used to Word, then Works Word Processor fits like a glove. It almost feels like a clone, though it has a couple minute differences. As differences between Works and Office, Works does not have anything like PowerPoint or Publisher. There's no ClipArt or FrontPage, or Email software. But, barring all of that, Microsoft Works definitely isn't a black sheep, it just really depends which nuances you are used to. It just doesn't have all of the functions of Office.

Use Open Office. It's a free download and it's Microsoft Word & MS Office compatible. Here's the link.

And here's a little-known secret I've used for years. Microsoft includes MS Word in an economy program called Microsoft Works Suite! It's the complete Word program with full support.

Here's one I found on Ebay for only $30.00, shipping included.

OpenOffice.org is excellent, but it is an office suite like MS Office and may be more than you need. There is a freeware word processor that's smaller, more along the lines of MS Word.
