well i was in China Beijing last January, u don't need a private guide, is easy to go every where in China, and of course nobody speak English nobody, i found that in the hotels Chinese people only speak basic phrases in English if you ask for other things they don't understand, only young people on the Internet coffee speak English but the taxi driver for sure not!! the hotel must be provide a little card print in english and chinese with the places where you can visit, like the china wall, forbidden city, Tian Nam Men plaza, etc, u can take a single taxi for 3 dollars you go there, the downtown does not exists, care about the smog and smile about its rush hours. Well in some tourist places u can rent the self-guide and u can listen the origin of the site, like in the forbidden city. And for sure if you take the hotel tour group for the China Wall is g b cheaper like 45 or 50 dollars round trip included the ticket (more than 10 people). If you want to buy nice Chinese paints go to the Tia nam men plaza and go to the University of Art u will have a nice surprise. Ahhh don't forget to go to the Mao Tse Tung memorial.

No do not get a private guide. I seen it reported on the hong kong news that they take you to places and rip people off because they get commission off of you. Also they will force you to buy things. One tour guide got mad and started yelling at the travelers and left them at the store. They normally tell you that your getting a good bragain but there take you to the most expensive places.

If you know a little chinese the best way is to so some research on line and print out all the places you need to go or go to the visitor guides and get a bunch of brochures
once you get to china.

Also you can join a tourist group you they normally list the places they go too. Its better to be in a group of people. Now days it isnt safe anymore to do private tour guides. You will never know where they will take you.

I just got back from Beijing, Wuhan, Dalian, Shanghai and other places. I saw the Great Wall and other sites with this group. Jane was my guide. I just can't compliment here enough. She gave me much more than I asked for and was totally knowledgable and charming.

She and a driver picked me up at my hotel. She spoke great English. Have fun!
