I am talking about in the remote areas of the Southern border. In these areas the Border Guards make contact with and chase drug runners frequently and if they are lucky they catch them.

As it is they can not shoot out tires and many drug dealers just turn around and drive back to Mexico with the Border Guards driving behind them with their lights and sirens on...the others just keep driving until they get to urban areas and then the border guards can't even pursue them.

it is strange though...those guys carrying hundreds and thousands of pounds of drugs do not stop for lights and sirens...I wonder why...

So Why can't the Border Guards use the PIT manuever or shoot out tires?

Spike strips to deflate the tires are also not effective in the wide open remote areas. The smugglers swerve around them with ease and also it is dangerous if the Border Guard is nearby because the smuggler could also swerve at him.

Guards also carry shotguns...
Nobody should be in the desert regions except Border Guards and it is not that difficult to see 1000 lbs of dope in the back of a vehicle...i think that is pleanty of reason to pull them over and it would be easier with the shotgun. As for being afraid of the drug runner shooting...thats why the border guards have guns too.

possible damage to people and property....seriously what would get hurt? the desert will be fine if a truck gets its tire flattened...please read the question again. "wide open remote area"

shooting IS deadly force when aimed at a living creature...not a tire.

PIT: They do not want to risk their lives against drug smugglers. In a position like that, they are more than likely to get shot.

Shoot out the tires: Very difficult to do with a pistol.

If they violate the traffic, then yes, they will get pulled over.

If they do not, the guards have no reason to pull thm over.

How do they know for a fact that they are shooting at a drug runner? You have to have probable cause that will stand up in a trial. You cant just assume someone is running drugs cause they are driving fast and not stopping. Maybe they are running people across the border. You shoot the tires out on the vehicle and it wrecks killing the driver and the innocent passengers, you go to jail for excessive use of force and quite possibly manslaughter. Same thing with the PIT maneuver. The wheels of the vehicle thats running can dig into the dirt or road and roll over killing the occupants.

Shooting at moving vehicles is generally discouraged by most L.E. agencies. Let's say you are such a crack shot you can actually nail the tire. The driver, some uneducated dipstick, high on his own product, loses control of the vehicle and wrecks it. The accident kills him or a passenger. Now, you have a problem. You are not allowed to kill these butt holes. They were just running. Deadly force is not justified. And, it became deadly force when the accident killed someone. You are liable both criminally and civilly.

Shooting IS using DEADLY Force. Unfortunately, transporting drugs and illegally entering the U.S. are not situations where deadly force is an option.

You can't just "shoot out the tires." Not only is it an unjustified misuse of deadly force, but its really really hard to do. TV is not, repeat NOT, reality!

Not to mention that some liberal Congressman or Senator would go completely nuts if we harmed, even accidentally, a nice economically motivated Southernly neighbor visitor!

It is extremely difficult to hit a moving car at more than 10 years distance, 30 feet. The border patrol should be given some predator drones like they use in Iraq and blast them with missles. BOOommmmmm. Dead dope smuggler.
Unless he's just carrying weed and they should let him go.

As it happens I have a friend who retired from the border patrol and now teaches agents over in Artesia,N.M...Pt manuver?..out there...good way to get killed on dirt...doesn't work...and while they do what they can, they have more in training...so, soon our border there will have more agents...You wouldn't believe what goes into being a border patrol agent..lots of the guys get into it thinking itis easy, it's not...it's harder than most other police jobs..and they are out there a lot of the time, with no help.....sad but true....

Don't believe what you see in the movies. Shooting from one moving vehicle at the tires of another moving vehicle is really tough. If you get close enough to do that, you're close enough to make them pull over. Taking wild shots from a fast-moving vehicle is a good way to kill innocent people.

a million. Bush did no longer, our justice device did. 2. Sorry, yet border guards don't have the perfect suited to easily shoot somebody coming over the border, as most of the unconventional protectionists / racists want them to do. logician mentioned it perfect.

Hmmm. Your question is intriguing. It sounds so logical. I hope someone from enforcement will answer you.

Maybe it is too dangerous? Maybe they can get outmanned in the remote areas? Even outgunned perhaps? It sounds very scary and unsafe for the officers. Maybe it is a military job?

Because the possible damage to people and property is too high. Law Enforcement can't just shoot when they want to.
