I wouldn't recommend any miniature dog for kids. Older children, perhaps, but for very young children, small dogs are not the best idea. Unless you are going to be supervising every minute of every interaction between your children and your dog, I would recommend a larger, more sturdy dog.

None of the toy dogs is a good match for kids (sorry) ... several reasons ... first and foremost, temperament, most toy dogs just don't LIKE kids! The single exception to that would be the Pug (they love everyone!) Also, the mini-dogs are just too small and fragile and would be in danger of being injured if played with too roughly. For kids, if you want a smallish dog, I'd get a mixed-breed from the shelter (do kids really care about a pedigree? NO!)
If you seriously want a purebred dog, please check out all the breeds before you decide. I like akc.org for breed information, and canismajor is a great site for all aspects of dog ownership ... also try petfinder to get a look at dogs that are available in your area.
Good luck ... and please be patient in your search. It's worth the extra time to do the homework, because that will ensure that you're happy with the dog you get!

Rat Terriers are great for kids. As long as you get a puppy to grow with the kids they are wonderful. I breed them and I have never had a complaint from any adoptive parents about problems with any of our pups with kids. They are very hearty dogs that dont break when you play rough, they come back for more. I would get probably a standard rat that will get between 10 and 20 pounds for kids. They are very loyal, lovable and are just great dogs all around.

Does it have to be a miniature? If your happy to have a small dog, look at something like a Scotty Terrior, they are very smart and provided you are firm they are easily trained. They are friendly, and not as bad tempered as a lot of other smaller dogs. And they're just so cute!

From my research, young children(undre 10) and small breed dogs are not a good match. A spaniel or shiba inu might be better. Small dogs are fragile and little kids tend to play to much. Becareful with whichever dog you decide to get. Good luck.

get a pug! they are great with children and they indeed in the toy breed classification. they have great temperaments...they are sweet and patient and one of the least aggressive dog breeds, in addition they sleep a lot, yet they are always ready for a good tussle, heck get two!

Small dogs can be very aggressive when they are young, so choose wisely.
