Soda.

I lived in Pittsburgh for a time and worked as a maintance man at a department store. On my first day they told me I needed to fix a "pop machine" in the brake room. I didn't want to seem dumb on my first day so I just said "OK" and went to the break room. I saw nothing. Just a table, some chairs and a soda machine.

I went back to my manager and asked, "Where is this pop machine?" and he told me again it was in the break room. Finally I said, "What does it do?"

He said, "Gives you pop." I said, "What's a pop?" and he said, "Like a Coke."

Suddenly I felt extremely stupid.

I used to live in Iowa too! And we called it pop. But a friend of mine came back from living in Maine and converted me to saying soda. Now I live on the west coast and fit right in by saying soda. What I don't get is the "Coke" thing in the south. You ask for a Coke and they ask what kind of Coke? That would so confuse me as a waitress, I'd bring them a Coke!

It's typical in the mid-west, and apparently in Canada too, to call it pop. On the coasts it's usually called soda. It comes from the original term, soda-pop. Certain people picked "soda" and some picked "pop." And down south, it's all called coke, for some odd reason...

Pop in Kansas, but I call it whatever I want to at the moment... For example one day it could be pop, the next soda, and on the third day "that fuzzy drink that's not healthy but it tastes good."

I'm from Minnesota and most of us say pop, but I had a friend that says soda, it drove me nuts. I hate that word and I now hate her too...but not because of that.
