well, just try and google this or look for forums on it & find different oppinions as to why; but i think its because it only became a know painting after he died & that led to the fact that people started questioning alot about the painting: like is the person really a woman or is it the painter, himself in "experimentation" (I studied history of art, so this is a true controvasy - as silly as it may seem) And also because no one knows who "she" was, but mostly because of all the publisity it has gotten: eg: it was stolen & mysteriously turned up again at some point many years ago. Mock art has been made about it...lots of cartoon, caricatures. Used for advertising. Centre peice in a couple of movies, eg : Mr. Bean......stuff like that has generated its popularity & made it famous.

It's been rumoured that Leonardo was so attached to it that he couldn't go anywhere without it - that it was his favourite painting. There's also the issue of the model; again, it's been said that she is actually Leonardo in female form, although it's more likely that it was the wife of a wealthy Florentine merchant, Lisa Gherardini. Also she was well known for her enigmatic smile, which is quite ambiguous. Technically speaking, it is a brilliant portrait - his pioneering use of sfumato (smoky, making the lines blend into each other easily) and chiaroscuro (light and dark, shadows) made it famous in his own lifetime. Of course, with the Da Vinci Code, it's become even more famous.

The Mona Lisa was stolen from 'The Louvre' (Museum in Paris) in a heist in 1911 by a Nationalist but was returned around two years later which contributes to the fame of the painting. 'Mona Lisa', (also known as Lisa Gherardini) was painted in her mid 20's after she married a silk merchant. To this day, the Italians know her as La Gioconda (Her husbands name was Francesco del Giocondo) and the French know her as La Joconde, which translates to 'playful one'.
The worlds must discussed painting don't you think?
And a brilliant one!

Are you sure it's 'the most famous' painting in history?

While it is certainly one of the most famous, other great art works, like Michelangelo's 'Sistine Chapel' Murals and Da Vinci's 'The Last Supper' have received as much, if not more, attention. And both Van Gogh's 'Starry Night' and Munch's 'The Scream' are as recognized as the 'Mona Visa.'

Because the painting is wrapped in mystery and
intrigue. No one knows for sure if Mona Lisa was a real person or DaVinci in drag.

Who knows.

Probably because it is so vivid specially for the period it came from. We 'modern man' can hardly see what is so good about it as we see 'picture perfect pictures' all the time.

It's her smile. Nobody has been able to reproduce that smile in any other painting. Also there is the question of why she is smiling.
