its a filthy, disgusting job where you have to clean bodily secreations off patients. its the work that nurses wont do so you have to do it.

Don't pay to be a cna! I took a free cna class years ago and ended up hating the work. I was at a retirement center. It was very sad and inpersonal.
I ended up becoming a direct care person or Caregiver. The pay is about the same and there is loads of overtime if you want it. I've been at the same house now for 6+ years and have been the supervisor for 5 of those.
I really enjoy it! I love it even. I take care of the same three special needs young men. They became like family, right away.
I stay here because #1 I'm attached to my boys. #2 My company is great. But I know if I ever move anywhere there are care giving jobs everywhere. We do more then a cna, we give meds even. If you care about people and like to help them, give it a try:)
Feel free to email me and ask any questions. Good luck to you and God Bless:)

I'm doing the CNA thing too. I start my classes in August though. I used to work in a nursing home. If you don't enjoy working with these people maybe you should look into a different career field. I love it! And if you really love it, it shouldn't matter so much about the money, right? Plus, if you're gonna go for more than a CNA you're gonna be making more money later. You gotta start at the bottom. But yeah, if you aren't willing to work with these people for free than I would say you probably don't like it at all. Find something you would be willing to do for free and then find someone to pay you for it.

I have several friends that work as CNA's and none of them are happy. They make terrible money for the hard work and time away from their families. I would advise you to look into a nursing degree if that is the field you want to go into. You might as well go all the way, or it most likely won't be worth your time. And always remember, if you do what you love and love what you do, you will never feel like you are actually working.
I wish you the best of luck.

I am a CNA and most of the time I like it. It is not for everyone, a lot of people don't want to bathe other people, change depends, deal with cleaning up doo and urine soaked sheets, putting up with uncooperative patients. I have been punched hard by combative Alzheimer's patients. But most elderly people are very grateful for your kindness and help. A lot of them are fun or funny and sweet. Even not working in a nursing home you will still bathe people and help them with grooming and do other things a lot of people would find distasteful. You have to ask yourself if you can handle this kind of work. You will not become rich at it, but it will help you to save up for a car, pay insurance. I even know people who were first CNAs, the Nurses, then doctors, they worked themselves up from the bottom.

I was a cna for almost twenty years it wears your body and your spirit down. Cleaning and changing elderly and disabled people is quite gross and not for the weak stomached. wait 'til you have to clean a recently deseaced. I paint houses for a living now and couldn't be happier. The pays better too. good luck. The elders need you.

If your interested in the medical field I would suggest getting your RNA (registered nursing...) although its cheaper to get your CNA because alot of skilled care facilities will train you for free. Which free is always nice. your RNA will pay more in the end. So what you have to ask your self is? ??? free ride on a CNA for not as much cash or, RNA and pay and work a little harder to get and and make loot. Toodles

It's great work experience for premed. And they are usually in good demand. Dealing with bodily fluids and secretions is part of being in the medical field. If you can't handle that maybe you should reconsider your career choice altogether.

Yes, because it gives you a good taste of nursing without committing to much time and money. If you decide you like it, then have have the experience you need.

No. Go for LPN or rn. The work is harsh on your body. I'm 22 and already had a shoulder injury. The pay is okay for me. I plan on going back to school but its hard with an injury.
