The ear canal is shaped somewhat like an hourglass. The skin on the outer part of the canal has special glands thatproduce earwax. The purpose of this natural wax is to repel waterand to trap dust and sand particles. Usually a small amount ofwax accumulates, and then dries up and falls out of the ear canalcaring with it unwanted particles. Ear wax is helpful in normalamounts and serves to coat the skin of the ear canal where itacts as a temporary water repellent. The absence of ear wax mayresult in dry, itchy ears, and even infection.

True. Thats why you arent supposed to go poking around your ear with a q tip. Not only does the q tip just cake the ear wax against the ear drum, you are getting rid of your ears protective substance.
