Hey good for you, I am a Ret Navy guy here who did 20yrs. I was in the Navy's shipboard engineering department. I was not a Nuke but a non nuke Machinist Mate. For the most part I really enjoyed my time in I saw many places thought the world and learned a life long skill. After I ret I sailed as a engineer in the merchant and world and now I work for the govt as a marine mechanic at the Naval Ship Yard here in my area. So the answer to your question would yes def go check it out and as far as what type of field you want see how you do on the screening test that the recruiter gives you. I know the navy has changed I see that from when I work jobs on the nuke carriers that I repair but you still can learn a skill that will benefit you the rest of your life.

Does 25 years, enlisted and officer qualify me to answer the question? I hope so. Nuclear power officers and those in intelligence are officers of the line. Theoretically any one of them can rise to the top position of Chief of Naval Operations. Civil engineers are officers of the Civil Engineering Corps. They serve as the officers who are involved with the Construction Battalions (Seabees) and also are involved in naval construction ashore.
If you are in a university or college, you might want to check with your alumni office and see if anyone from your institution is currently a commissioned officer in the Navy. That way you will get some info from a guy or gal who has more than passing familiarity with your situation.
Should you live in an area near a Navy port, you might want to contact the public affairs department at that activity and find out if they are going to have any "open house" visiting periods for their ships. Then go and visit, making sure you seize the opportunity to speak to one of the offficers on board.

The Navy is great, but do you have at least a BS degree in any of the career fields you just mentioned? If not you will need to go in enlisted and then become a nuke if you meet all the requirements. You can become an officer later through the Seaman to Admiral Program if your package is selected and you are qualified.

My Brother-In-Law joined the US Navy as an enlisted boot
seaman wanna-be and retired as the Commanding Officer
of California's China Lake Naval Station. My Father-In-Law
joined the US Navy as an enlisted boot seaman wanna-be
and retired as Chief Gunnery Mate with a Navy Cross.
I've been around both often enough to pick up some salty
words but they can curse non-stop for more than five minutes
and not use any one horrid nastyness more than once.

if you want to be an officer you need to get into officers school. and you need real brains and the ability to learn alot very fast and retain in for nuclear power and pass the asvab very high. my husband was a nuke. they work very long hours 12 a day and have duty on the ship every 4-6 days. you will also go to school for two years to train. m then once on your ship you will begin training again it never stops for a nuke. good luck

Good choice...to be considered as an officer you have to have a college degree. There's probably a few other considerations as well. I spent 10 years in the US Navy....I recommend it...check it out!

do you qualify? do you have a 4 year degree in a technical major( if you want to go Nuke, that major better be in Engineering or Physics). Is your GPA at least a 3.5 or better from a well known and respected school?
do you have Leadership experience? have you volunteered? are you under the age cut off? Do you meet all the physical and moral standards?

If you have a college degree, then apply for OCS and try an get into one of those programs. Contact a local recruiter for Officer Programs and if they don't give you what you ask for, turn around and walk out.
