I used to get one every few months, but recently it's more like once a week, and I had five at work this evening. They used to be sudden and over quickly, but lately they last longer. Tonight they seemed to have echoes; the stab would last for ten or fifteen seconds, but a lingering aching/sore feeling would persist for another minute or two. How can I keep these from reoccuring?

I suggest you see a chiropractor as soon as possible. They are specialists in treating headaches. In the mean time place an ice pack on the back of your neck for fifteen minutes, when ever these occur.
