Im thinking to changing careers from a teacher to an office clerk. I like organizing, but I dont want to do something boring. Yeah, Im tired of being noble and whatever. Actually Im more tired of devoting my whole life to teaching kids who dont care. I go to work at 7am and still work when at home, sometimes until 11 to finish my lessons or projects or grading. Im not good at it anymore and Im burned out.

There is no boring job if you're happy and find enjoyment in doing the job. You could be a security guard with schedule from 7PM till 7A but you enjoy the peace and quiet, you look forward to coming to work everyday. You could be a greeter @ Walmart but you enjoy meeting different people everyday, you will like it.

Just want to share my thoughts.

I'm an elementary teacher who has taught poor kids in inner city schools and have taught rich kids in both private and upper middle class public schools. I understand 100% what you're going through. A few comments: 1) I learned how to leave school work at school to prevent me from burning out. I've mostly taught middle school. 2) If you're burned out teaching kids who don't care, try teaching in a wealthier community where the parents push and support their kids more than the community you're in. Personally, I enjoyed teaching in tougher schools but did see many students that didn't care and didn't get support from home. Also, I always thought that the best and... worst teachers work in the tougher schools. Essentially, many of those kids that "don't care" have no adults looking out for them and while you will reach less of them than in a "better" school, the differences you make in tougher schools are "priceless." 3) Myself, I love teaching but hate the pay. I'm seeking a part-time career where I can have my own little business; but, I'm not interested in leaving education. What makes teaching special, to me, is seeing those light bulbs come on when you aren't expecting it. As teachers, we often will never know what positive impacts we have really made. Those kids that seem to not care, may appreciate your effort more than you know.

I have never answered one of these Yahoo Answers before but saw your question and had to answer it. For me, I find using humor tremendously important when teaching. I will tell jokes, do a quick magic trick, draw a caricature of a student (I can do those), and even wear a goofy looking Halloween mask. When kids laugh, they relax and look forward to your class more. While I mentioned the power of laughter, with discipline, I don't play around. I have rules and the kids know the consequences AND I enforce them. I do think toooooo many teachers today, especially in elementary, do little artsy projects that distract from valuable classtime where they can learn. Many teachers disagree with me but some agree. I think we, in America, need to challenge our kids more: more reading, writing, debating, speaking, etc. Art is important - in art class.

Bottomline: if you don't like kids - do leave education. If you like kids, down deep, find a way to solve your challenges and problems. My email address is: mluque4@hotmail.com if you wish to ask me questions.

For the record, I think the MOST BORING job would be a proof reader / fact checker for a publishing company that prints insurance policies. But, I think sincerely, outside of possibly careers in ministry - if you're religious - there are no more important jobs out there than teaching kids how to be good adults. You won't reach everybody but you also won't know who you really reach. I still have kids from my first year of teaching, seven years ago, that email me to tell me how they are doing. Not many but a few.
