I think that you should take him back to a place that you, your mom, and he went to at some point...Some place that was really special for you all. If you can't do that, then I think you need to focus on him..
Does he like movies?
Does he like music?
Does he love his car?
Make your gift ultra-personal...
That means more than anything...
He receiving a gift from you that really shows that you understand him.

How about a new step-ladder with a big card in the shape of a heart on top? Then write inside the card that he's the best step-dad on earth. :)

Why not go out and have a picture taken of yourself and buy a nice frame and give that to him. Tell him that he is a great guy.
