I have an Amish Friendship bread starter - and I am almost on day 10 - but my mixture isn't bubbling or rising? I followed the directions I was given. Is the starter "dead"? Is there anyway to revive it? Thanks!

I didn't use any metal utensils or bowls. This is the second time around (I made the starter about 20 days ago, then I made the first batch and gave them away - and I kept one. I followed the directions exactly.
Maybe I will just see how it turns out when I make the bread tonight.

It could be the vessel it needs to be in a glass, plastic or ceramic container any metal will kill the yeast and prevent it growing - so will stirring with metal (use wood or plastic) and cold it needs to be set on the counter to grow at room temperature.
Starter is pretty tough. It can handle neglect surprisingly well. If you've ignored the needs of your starter well past two weeks, try to revive it before abandoning it altogether. It may look dark, but if it doesn't smell bad (or different from the way it usually smells), stir it well and give it a good meal -- use two cups of flour and one cup of water. Cover it, and leave it out on your kitchen counter for 12 hours or so. If you can see lots of tiny bubbles and if it smells right, you've succeeded in reviving it. Promise that you'll never neglect it again!
