The purple/yellow in a Dodge (often in its own or a 2-pin plug) isn't necessary for the new CD player installation. It's a vehicle data wire; you should leave it strictly alone.

If your radio wire harness has two separate plugs, one gray and one black, then neither one includes a ground wire. Make sure you connect the ground wire separately. If you're getting no power at all, then you probably have a blown fuse in the vehicle; be sure to check the fuse box under the hood.

If you get power but no sound, then you may have an Infinity system with a factory amp. It's not necessary to bypass the amp, but you do have to activate it. Make sure the blue or blue/white wire in your harness is connected to the blue/white wire from your deck.

What exact problem are you having?

The constant power wire is like a small direct line from the battery, as in it's always hot, but if you were putting it to the positive of the accessories it should have just been creating a circuit. That's not to say that you didn't short out the wiring some other way and I'm not sure what the wire was that you actually touched with the constant, but that's typically run from the positive side as a constant, unless you have a grounded positive electrical system in your car. You wouldn't in an '89 Escort unless you did that yourself. Wiring should be hopefully fused, although I don't know how far back the fusing would be, whether it be all the way back to the fuse box or a separate fuse nearer to the wiring.

What type of radio are you installing? Did you purchase a harness that looks like this one?

Your Neon might be amplified and you'll have to bypass the factory amp. Does your factory radio have "Infinity or Infinity Gold" anywhere on the face of it? If you have a Digital Multimeter check the Red and the Yellow wire for voltage, should read at 12V + with car off and between 13V+ and 14V+ with the car running. You'll also need to check your ground connection (Black wire ) try grounding the Black wire to bare metal instead of the black wire on the harness.

If the cd player is an aftermarket, usually the yellow wire is the battery wire it should never connect it to the chassis. Then the red wire is the key ignition accessory power wire. and the black wire the ground. Here's the wiring code for chrysler vehicles:

Didn't the CD player come with a wiring diagram? The purple is probably a speaker wire, but the yellow is usually power (+) . You can splice it into the red (+) also power. But if the CD came with a booklet or wiring schematic, please use it. You can also go on-line and find a schematic for the specific CD player you have.

lol the yellow is probably a ground wire. take a screw and screw it into the firewall or a part of the car that has metal
