kidnapping rates are very high, especially of foreigners. It has become a money making business there which makes personal security when just out and about very difficult to maintain. My cousin, her husband and their 5 year old son were all kidnapped together last year....the kidnappers released the husband first for a large sum of money, then the wife, for yet another ransom, and finally, another kidnapper was hired by my uncle to kidnap my nephew from the original kidnappers. They kept the little boy drugged so he would not cry or be upset while he was held by the kidnappers.
The police in Haiti are corrupt like in most other central American countries, but add to that the fact that the police force is relitively young and has minimal training. In other words, they are unreliable. 911 does not exist down there, so you cannot rely on police for any aid when it comes to personal security. The judicial system is even more corrupt so God forbid you should get mixed up with any trouble there such as being robbed, or worse, it is unfortunate to say, but the law is NOT on your side....the law in Haiti is always on the side of the person with the most financial means.
My personal experience in Haiti: I went to a "disco" during the Christmas Holidays and someone pulled out a gun, fired it (not sure if at someone else or what) everybody ran, the U.N. showed up with machine guns and their blue hats to try and keep the peace....all in all a very negative experience. On the other hand, I've seen everything that Haiti has to offer in terms of tourist attractions, I've been to the Citadel in Cap Haitian (AMAZING EXPERIENCE), i've walked the beautiful beaches, gone to the waterfalls inland, gone up to KensKof, danced in the streets at carnaval (dangerous but FUN!)
My conclusion is this, Haiti is dangerous, but it's also beautiful. So if you are contemplating going there, you must have a love for all things Caribbean and have an adventurous soul....after all, life if dangerous everywhere you go.
This is how i see it....people live there, millions of people, everyday, they go to work, they go to the beach, they go to the groceries, they travel to the provences, and they lock their doors and night and go to sleep. So, if they can live there, and they are human beings just like you and me, then you can visit there....even if only for a week or two.

Haiti is very unstable politically and considered to be among the most dangerous places to visit. I don't know the specific political environment right now, but governments are generally corrupt and never last long. Weak central authority means lots of crime and gang activity as well. Power is fractioned in Haiti, meaning that rival groups vie for rule and eventually coups happen. The country is very very poor, owing to corruption and political instability, which in turn means a weak economy. I was in Port-au-Prince once as a photographer and it really was a sad experience. Haiti could be so beautiful and a nice place to live.

My neighbor spent several years living in Haiti, and working in an orphanage. It is quite dangerous, and her family was worried sick about her the whole time she was there. The government is unstable, and there was quite a bit of fighting going on when my neighbor was there. (2-3 years ago).

Well I went to Haiti, but it was a walled off part of the island used as a private island for cruise passengers. It was a beautiful beach & had a great time. But I'd never go to actual Haiti, way too dangerous. Unless you need to, like you have family there or something ,no need to put yourself in such danger.

Yes.
For poor people in a country with limited law & order, violence is often a "short-cut" to instant wealth. Tourists and visitors are easy targets.
In Haiti, violence and political instability are common, so it is not a safe place to visit.

More poor than dangerous.
It is dangerous if you act rich and travel foolishly with flashy stuff and a car at night (same as NYC).
Otherwise, besides the bad roads and lack of facilities & amenities, it is not dangerous!

I have friends who have been shot at, mugged, raped while visiting that pleasent island.
I know of tourists who have been robbed and raped.
But if you stay away from the countryside, beaches, villages and towns, you should be ok.
Just stay in the resorts.
