I would have to say a LAB or a Golden Retriever. I have had both they are the most loving dogs and they will protect.

most terriers will do , also boxers. schnauzers warn with a sharp bark and i have seen one take down a like a fedEx person but there was no damage done. they tend to be very loyal. herding dogs like collie or aussie are very protective. really it depends on the dog i had a goldie that saved my life. go to breedinfo.com they will give you a quiz and it will tell you what breed is protective and good with kids.

I think a Collie would be a perfect dog for you! It's always protective but NEVER aggressive. I have to commend you for thinking of the safety of your kids FIRST in deciding what breed is right.

Collies have a very sweet, kind disposition. They genuinely LOVE children, and since it's a herding breed, it'll even help you keep tabs on the kids!

I know I'm gonna get slammed by the Rottie and GSD and Dobie fans (among others), but I really don't think those breeds are suitable for families with young children. Those are all great dogs, but I think are best for adults and (well-behaved) older children.

I agree with those who suggested a Lab or Golden ... both are excellent family dogs ... but since you specifically asked about a protective dog, I think the Collie has more of a protective instinct. A Border Collie, an Australian Shepherd, or even a Sheltie might be a good choice for you, too ... but those three have higher exercise needs than the Collie.

Whatever breed you decide on, I'd check into purebred rescue first ... almost every breed has a rescue network ... you can acquire a purebred dog for less than you would from a breeder. You'll get (usually) an adult dog who is past the housetraining issues and the puppy-chewing stage ... has been evaluated medically and temperamentally ... has been spayed/neutered ... and is current on vaccinations. The (slight) downside is that you might have to wait a bit longer, since breed-specific rescues want to make SURE the dog they place with you is a good match. It's a worthwhile trade-off, I think, because you'll save a ton of money in vet costs, AND you'll know what you're getting.

Best of luck to you! You can check out all the breeds at akc.org ... and canismajor is a great site for info on all aspects of getting and owning a dog.

P.S. Go with the Collie (trust me!) I forgot to mention ... the Collie is a drop-dead GORGEOUS dog, and you'll be the envy of everyone at the dog-park!

Define 'protector'
Do you want something that will alert you to an intruder? Just about any dog will do.
Do you want something that will intimidate an intruder? There are some very friendly big dogs, Giant Schnauzers, Bernards, Newfoundlands, Swiss Mountain Dogs, are all child-friendly
But if you want something that will attack an intruder, it will not be a child friendly dog (imagine what would happen if your kid had a sleep over).

I have a st. Bernard that I absolutely wouldn't give anything for. I have a two yr. old daughter that will pull the dogs tail, throw rocks at him, tries to ride him like a horse, and Boomhower, my dog loves it, those two are inseparable. One day I was playing with my daughter in the yard, and all of a sudden boomhower wouldn't let us go any further, I was getting upset and he wasn't backing down. Then I realized why. There was a six foot long rattlesnake coiled up and if we would have gotten any closer it would have probably have struck, not bad for a 5 mo. old pup.

That is a really broad question becuase some dogs have been deemed "innaproprate" family dogs, but make excellent family guardians. The rottwiler has a big, bad reputation but is extreamly sweet and loving towards it's family and is an exceptional guardian of children. Many of the mastiff breeds make wonderful family pets and guardians but you have to be able to handle the size and drool factor! Shepards are excellent family pets and guardians, they love to have something to do- they don't make excellent house pets however and require much room to run or vigirous daily walks/runs. Go to your local library and do some research or call your local vet to get some imput. Picking a dog that is going to be a good match for your family/lifestyle is the first key to being a good dog owner! Good luck!

Golden Retriever. I have one, his name is Sammy. We got him for my son when my son was 6 months old. He is now 9 and is an awesome dog. My son doesn't go anywhere in the house without him even to the bathroom. He is so sweet and very gentle but also very protective. I have had several dogs and he fits exactly what you are looking for. Hope this helps.

Labs are the best dogs for families with children. They are not too big and they have a loud bark. It will deter predators and they are great with kids. German Shepherds and Dobermans are dominant breeds and I never recommend them to people with small children. If you do go with a bigger dog get a trainer in or take the dog to your local pet store for training.

Dogs that are protective, but good with children are: Dobermans, Boxers, Rhodesian Ridgebacks, Newfoundlands, German Shepherds, Rottweilers, etc.
HOWEVER, every single breed in the world, needs to be properly socialized to be trustworthy with children, including small breeds.
Get a protective breed, and then just properly socialize them and any dog will do well with kids.
