Mat 16:13 ¶ When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?
Mat 16:14 And they said, Some [say that thou art] John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.
Mat 16:15 He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?
Mat 16:16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
Mat 16:17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed [it] unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
Mat 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

You forgot to write the whole story. It's obvious when you read the whole thing that the rock is Jesus.

I will use "The Wycliffe Bible Commentary" and comments in the "Liberty Annotated Study Bible" to answer your question from a Protestant viewpoint.

From "The Wycliffe Bible Commentary": Upon this rock I will build my church. There is an obvious play upon the words Peter (Petros, proper name denoting a piece of rock) and rock (petra, a rocky mass). The spiritual body, the church, mentioned here for the first time, is built upon the divinely revealed fact about Christ confessed by Peter (1 Corinthians 3:11; 1 Peter 2:4) as men are made aware of and acknowledge His person and work (so Chrysostom, Augustine). Another view common among some Protestants (Alford, Broadus, Vincent) is that Peter ( along with the other apostles; Ephesians 2:20; Revelation 21:14) is the rock, but without the papal supremacy ascribed to him by unscriptural Romish notions.

From the "Liberty Annotated Study Bible": The Greek word used for rock (petra) is played against the name Peter (Gr. Petros). Some use this passage to teach that Peter was the foundation stone of the church, that he had a primacy among the apostles, and that he became Bishop of Rome. The verse will scarcely bear the first of these propositions and certainly none of the others. Peter may be meant by the rock, but he is not the exclusive foundation. For the twelvefold foundation of the apostles of the church see Ephesians 2:20 and Revelation 21:14. This seems borne out by the fact that the same words are spoken to all the disciples in Matthew 18:18 as are spoken to Simon Peter in Matthew 16:19. Therefore, the rock or foundation of the church is the confession (ultimately, the doctrine) of the apostles, which became normative for the true church."

Austin, I suppose Peter could mean little stone since petros means a piece of rock.

People think it's Peter because Peter means rock. But actually Jesus was saying that he was going to build the church upon himself. When he said this rock he meant himself.

Peter is the rock

What Jesus said to Simon in Matthew 16:18 was this: ‘You are Kepha, and on this kepha I will build my Church.’

One must go back to the original writings of the New Testament, which was written in Aramaic and Hebrew, not Greek. Kepha means ROCK

His name was (in English) Simon. Peter comes from the Greek petros, which means Rock. Jesus changed Simon's name when He told him that Simon was The Rock.

Petros = "movable" rock

This is the kind of rock that would be taken from a quarry and shaped to be a corner stone or a foundation stone.

This was the strength and character of Peter.

Cool?

the bible. or in other words the word of God. there is another scripture that says
matthew 7:24-
Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:
And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.
And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:
And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.
so his teachings (the bible) is the rock
