It has small flaky floaties in it too, not sure what they are, rather opaque in color (the floaties).

Kummel is a liqueur made with herbs and fennel seed, for those who aren't familiar with it. I'm just not sure if the stuff gets poisonous with age or what (i mean more poisonous than alcohol already is, of course)

Give it a try - open the bottle, and take a quick whiff...

If it smells off - then chuck it.

Otherwise, grab a container (carafe/decanter), a funnel, and a coffee filter. Pour the wine into the container - through the filter-lined funnel - and you're set ;);)

Maybe before you decide to drink the drink you should look around the bottle and see if it has an expiration date on it. If it dosent then you may want to shake it up and see if the flaky stuff leaves and drink on>

Dont open it yet!!

Put it out on ebay ... someone may be interested in a bottle of 1956 whatever ... you may be able to pull lots of $$$ from the sale and get yourself a good bottle of something more drinkable :)

Try it out ... and if you do get a good sale from it ... treat me to a glass of single malt :)

kuemmel is german for "carawayseed". usually unopened liquor doesn't go bad, or get toxic. the floaties are probably remnants of carawayseed, herbs, and fennelseed. invite some friends and crack it open !

I don't know what Kummel is...if its red wine it should be good. (just skim the floaty things off the top they are probably just part of the cork)
Whiskey gets better with age (fine congacs, brandy etc.) but I don't know what Kummel is..sorry
