I live close to Los Angeles and what I have seen is that there is a lot of "haves" and "have nots", not a lot of middle class. The public school system is struggling - it is one of the worst school districts in the country - much of that is because of the language barrier - too many students only speak Spanish and have not integrated into the American culture. When I drive through L.A. I go straight through and make sure I have enough gas because I just don't feel compelled to stop. The roads are horrible and poorly kept (you can almost see the dividing line between Ventura County and Los Angeles County by how the roads are kept well in Ventura and in L.A. your bouncing like a rubber ball in your car), it is VERY smoggy and congested pretty much all the time. On the occasion I have to go to L.A. for work I have to mentally prepare myself the night before - there is quite a bit of hostile drivers who are in an unreasonable hurry who love to sit on their horns while flipping you off. Lastly, you better know your way around and not get lost in the wrong area. The nice parts of L.A. are VERY nice, but like I said, it is extremely polarized - there is not very much "in-between".

What part?? It's a huge city. From Chinatown to East L.A. to West L.A.
Ladera Heights in south central L.A. is mostly very rich black people. Chinatown is mostly asian and an older section of town. West Los Angeles is mostly white or jewish people...very expensive. East Los Angeles is mostly 1st and 2nd generation Mexicans. Downtown L.A. is where most yuppies and government employees work and is going through huge re-development with lofts everywhere, and will soon be the new Manhattan, or so say the real estate agents. Hollywood section of L.A. is pretty cool, and you can run into movie stars at any given moment.
Overall, it's pretty good or else it wouldn't be the 2nd largest city in the country.

I agree with Yak Ryder. We bailed out in 1991. All of the good paying Areo space jobs left so we did to.have been back a few times for a visit and it is worst then ever. The roads are a mess and things look run down.My old neighborhood is still sort of nice but the areas around it suck.

I think that this city has grown a lot with immigration. Not only in respects of population and diversity of people, but also the city and the state as a whole has grown economically. I wonder why California does so well economically? Why is California ranked at the top as having a great economical system? Two words: illegal immigrants. Without immigration, this state, and probably the whole U.S would suffer economically.

Mayor Tony "Villar" is a joke. Governor Armand is a disaster. Cardinal Mahoney harbors criminals.
Basically, LA is going down the tubes because of the illegals!

My in-laws live there. It's a pig sty. To answer your question, I lived there in the late 70's and it's definitely gone downhill since then. Hundreds-of-thousands of good aero space jobs have fled the city and the state of California.
