Here's the correct answer to your question. It's called "self-mutilation", a form of self-destructive behavior. It quite common, and anyone who's been abused can use some professional help. When they say they can deal with it, they are ignoring the facts or their own well being and are in serious denial. Depression is even worse. Suicide starts with attempts that may not be seen by others. Example, speeding in a car. If they are "cutters", the usually have "hesitation marks" -- more than one big cut to finish the job. Tattoo's are a form of hesitation marks. It's so sad that most of the people who have been abused or are depressed can have normal lives if they could only take the first step on the road to recovery: admitting they can't do it by themselves and learn to ask for help.

I have been suffering from post partum depression for the past one year when I gave birth to a baby boy. I couldn't stop thinking about how my husband loves him more than me and how things might be better if he wasn't born at all. Thus, I stayed away from him because I knew that I might do something I will regret for the rest of my life.

Almost instantly I went to a therapist and convince them that I need help. Among other things, I've tried herbal supplements and other book to treat depression but nothing works like the Depression Free Method. So now I'm proud to say I'm one of the happiest mother in the world. My husband loves us both very much and I thank the Lord for the blessing he gave us.

Depression Free Method?

well, people.. who have been abused.. or, who are seriously depressed, psychologically donot get tattooed to get the memories off their backs.. or worse still, a tattoo could be a reminder.. etc. my point is, people with such problems already have enough to contemplate with.. therefore logically, would not want to go through an itchy and painful tattoo process.. but would rather go through a couselling process that is more comforting & healing..
Those who most likely get tattooed are those who want to have the "tough guy looks" or "cool chick looks".. but nothing really boils down to the notion that those being abused or depressed most likely gets a tattoo..

I have been extremely depressed in the past. I do not have a tattoo though. I believe it is a personal preference issue rather than a psychological issue.

A tattoo for many people is not just a decoration.
It can divide time into the 'before' (bad) and 'after' (in recovery)

It can also serve as a reminder of what you've made it through and what's important to you.

I do not think that they are more likely to get one, but it is a sign of self expression and freedom of ones own body. so a tattoo can symbolize an overcome event in the life and psychologically it helps them to feel a sense of control and again the freedom that it is their own body and that they can do whatever they want to it

It is probably easy to verify that more people that do not have tatoos suffer serious depression and have been abused. Tatoos can exist in the subset, but it is not directly correlated.

If we watch tattoo shows on TV, we get that impression...Miami Ink for exp.....before I saw those, I thought only bikers and sailors got them.....I think it is an outlet for them...but I am against marking up your skin..there is just something about it that reminds me of the pagans and idol worshipers. in the Old Testament.

Probably, why else would someone withstand the pain and change the purity of skin with dark ink for the rest of eternity?
