Grand central is a fine place if you want a hotel. If we are just talking location (i don't know about prices), grand central is a .5 second subway ride, or a nice lesuire walk to times square. There is a shuttle (subway shuttle train) than runs between grand central and time square. There is also the 7 train that connects the two the locations. Only difference is that the shuttle skips 5th avenue, while the 7 train does not. Not much of a difference, unless you needed to be somewhere 2min. ahead of other people. Also, grand central is one of the main hubs of commuting in NYC. So you can the 4,5, or 6 up to yankee stadium. The 4 and 5 are express, and the 6 is local. From what i remember, the yankee stop is express so any of the trains should stop their. To be honest with you, you can stay anywhere in new york and get to where you want to be in a matter of minutes. I live in Queens, and I am a 12min ride to grand central. Of course, if i was on vacation to new york i would be in the city. Either way, as along as you are comfortable with your location, everywhere in new york city is at your finger tips.

Grand Central is very close to Times Square. You can walk between them in about 15 minutes. They're 5 blocks apart. Good luck finding a cheap hotel though, both areas are expensive.
Going to Yankee Stadium from Grand Central, take the 4 subway uptown. The subway goes straight to the stadium.

at grand central, you take the 4 train uptown to 161st street and Yankee stadium (6 train stops since the 4 train goes express). One way on the train will cost $2.00 (easier to get a fun pass which is $7 and you have unlimited rides for 24 hours); cab will cost you anywhere from $40 to $60
Grand central is about 6 to 7 blocks from Times square. As for costs of hotels I really don't know but try hotel.com and compare prices.

Grand Central is not terribly far from Times Square. I used to walk that all the time. Neither are anywhere near Yankee Stadium. The Yankees are in the Bronx not Manhattan. I believe you take the 1,2 or 3 subway lines (red) to the Yankees, that's closer to Times Square. Grand Central has the 5,6 and 7 (green) subway lines that also go to the Bronx...but I do not believe to Yankee Stadium.
In any event, New York's subways connect everything and go anywhere. You just follow the subway maps and transfer from one train to the next. Ask someone once you get there. It really isn't an issue to get around. But you may like Times Square more as it is more fun!
