The role of the godfather and/or godmother is very important. They must be firm Catholic believers, able and ready to help the newly baptized—child or adult—on the road of Christian life.
To ensure this, a godparent must be at least 16 years old (for maturity's sake), fully initiated (having received Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist), be someone other than the legal parents, and one who leads a life in harmony with the Church.
For more information, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church, section 1255: http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text/pt2sect2.htm
and the Code of Canon law, Canon 872 and following: http://www.vatican.va/archive/ENG1104/__P2Y.HTM
With love in Christ.

Becoming a Godfather is being involved in the religious education of a child. If something were to happen to his parents, you would promise to be responsible for making sure that the child follows the Catholic church laws and participates in receiving the sacraments. Even when the parents are around you would support the child in his religious upbringing.

to help raise them in a good Christian Catholic environment. If you are not a practicing Catholic you can be a witness to the Baptism but, not a Godfather. Only practicing Catholics can be Godfathers.

You will be a part of the baptism ceremony as well, and named as the godfather, and you are meant to be responsible for helping the child with 'god' related things for the rest of their lives. Eg, being a religious advisor for them throughout their lives.

For Catholics, the role of godparents is to make sure that the child will be properly brought up in the Catholic religion if something happens to the parents. It does not (although it can if properly documented) mean that the child will live with the godparents if something happens to the parents. I would suggest that you discuss the expected role with your friend, but the godparent role in this day and age is mostly symbolic.
