Why are we so judgemental, even with our own children?? I'll admit I went through a period thinking my daughter was getting a tad chubby – but then she went through a growth spurt and I started thinking she looked a bit on the thin side. The past few weeks she’s been storing up extra weight again, which I know this time means a growth spurt is on its way! She’s only 20mths old, and I’m sizing her up?!? We have to take a step back and think about what they eat, how often, their activity level, their own appetite… we offer healthy, nutritious meals (with the occasional treat of course) as often or as little as our child dictates, and their weight should be perfect for them. We’ve all seen the occasional child that you think ‘Wow, that child needs to eat more!’ but I don’t know without seeing a picture of your toddler if I would have that reaction or not. There are chubby kids, and skinny kids, and kids all in-between. Perhaps your son has a fast metabolism, and will be blessed genetically. Are you and his father both thin people? That typically is inherited. If you agree your child needs to gain a bit of weight, as perhaps he’s falling behind on his growth chart in the weight department, you can always offer yogurt as a ‘fattener upper’. It’s healthy but full of calories at the same time. Don’t try offering sweets or other fatty foods just to get weight on him as that’s sure to start problems.

The real question is do you want him to be "plumped up" or do you want him to be healthy? Ask your pediatrician if his weight is normal. If it is, then do not try to make him gain weight.

Secondly, ask your husband why he thinks your son is too skinny. Is there some specific area he is concerned about? Otherwise, let him know that many toddlers are "too skinny" because they are very active little people!

Rather than starting an obsession with weight, just make sure your toddler is healthy!

If he is eating well, has good skin tone, is active, bright, and doing things normal at that age, then don't worry about weight too much.

If he doesn't eat, is tired, pale, lethargic etc, see your Dr!

A healthy child given a healthy diet will gain the weight they need, for their genetic makeup.

Before you go giving your child a disposition to be obese at an older age, talk to your pediatrician and see what he/she has to say. If the pediatrician says your child is fine, don't go making the toddler gain weight. You don't want to get him/her started on a lifetime of fighting obesity.

how much does he weigh?? what is his length?? has your pedi ever said anything to you about him being underweight? Do not try to fatten him up, especially by giving him sugary or fatty foods.. it could harm him in the long run.. If you are truely concerned about his weight bring it up to his pedi.
