308 is a short action round it has a lot of diff types of loadings and is very popular. 30-06 is a long action round, still a lot of loadings and very pop. both have been used for sniper rifles in the past. you will get a little more yardage in the 06 but the ballistics aint far off from each other. now the 300 is my personal favorite. you will get more distance, more knock down power but it will kick you harder. it all comes down to what you can afford and shoot accurately. 300 win mag 35 a box, 308 and 30-06 about 22 a box. the 308 is what most people go with because it doesnt kick as hard on your end as the 300 does.
according to remington ballistic comparison the 300 win mag shoots flatter out to 500 yards, has 300 more ft of knockdown power at 300 yards, and is moving 200 fps faster at 300 yards than the 06 and the 308 is not far behind the 06. if you shoot a lot and are gonna make 500 yard shots go with the 300 if not stick with the 308

I'm one of those odd folks who is not overly fond of the .30-'06 cartridge. I know it is a helluva great cartridge, but it just doesn't trip my trigger.
I don't like the .300 WinMag at all. Especially in light sporter weight stainless steel barrels. Sure you can load it up or load it down, but it will still use more powder than the .30-'06 to get the same velocity you can get with an '06.
Now I like the .308 Win. It will do anything a .30-'06 or .300 WinMag will do and it will use less powder, and produce less recoil getting it done.
In addition, the .308 Win is available in trim, handy, elegant short action rifles that are generally speaking easier and faster to work for repeat shots.
Another thing, the .300 WinMag is a PIA to reload. That short neck can be rather persnickety about proper bullet seating and COAL.
And if you draw a bead on bin Laden, you will be using whatever rifle Uncle Sam tells you to use, regardless of your preferences.

I build custom rifles (shooting "systems") and you would be fine with any of the 3. I assume you meant the 300 Win Mag?
They all have excellent ballistic's but in order to be an 800+ yard "Reach out and touch something" rifle you need high quality optic's and a custom bullet load that works best for your custom gun. Be prepared to spend a several thousand dollars. Last but not least you need training and skill in addition to the basic's listed here..I can understand "punching" Bin Laden" but why the heck would you fly to Pakistan mountains after?....lol You would be in Bin Laden's home turf.......P.S. Who's Nelson?

If you're having a custom gun built and don't mind belted cartridges, why don't you go with the 300 H&H? A classic, and that gentle slope ensures a smooth and reliable feed. True, it's a bit much for deer, but you can always load it down a bit, and all three are really more than deer cartridges. If that's the limit of what you're hunting, another classic like the 7mm Mauser would be a better choice.
