Not all amish take good care of their dogs. They have auctions in Ohio 2X a year. Most of the time the adults they don't sell end up being taken home and shot. I have gotten a dog from an amish farm once. She was being tied to the bumper of a truck with a rope until someone came to get her. She was terrified of people and would pee when you talked to her. I am not saying all amish are this way, just that there are some that are.

You should be able to go to the breeder and meet the pup's mother. She should be on site. Judge for yourself if you believe they are taking good care of the dogs. Are they well groomed and cared for? Are they sheltered from the elements? Are they left in cages and not taken out? How do the adult dogs look? How big are their crates? Would you treat your dog the way they are treating these dogs? A good breeder really cares about the dogs and treats them well. They don't overbreed the dogs and don't sell the puppies before 8-9 weeks of age. It's important to look at these factors, because you don't want to support a puppy mill. If you feel the dogs are well cared for, why not get a puppy from the Amish?

However, I would suggest that you look online at petfinder.com for a dog. There are tons of purebreds and puppies there, and they've all been rescued from being put to sleep. They need homes and are often cheaper than dogs from breeders. You can get just about any breed there. See for yourself....

As with any other group - nothing is universial on this. Some have the parent dogs following the kids around, some have clean well cared for kennels (but caged 24/7), some are horrors...
D-d few are spend a whole lotta bucks on genetic testing or assuring they have top notch breeding stock

doesnt matter if the dogs appear to be clean and taken care of.. they are still puppy mills. They produce puppies for profit, not to preserve or improove the breed. Some of them have even cashed in on the "designer dog" craze and are breeding small mutts. They do not care who buys their pups.. they are sold to petshops and at auctions.

Not all Amish do take care of their dogs.

I wouldn't buy anything from the amish most of them. They don't have their children vaccinated let alone animals. They don't treat their animals well, I have seen this first hand. Amish got into breeding dogs simply because there is no profit in farming. Don't let them fool you, the amish community is like everyone else.

I've read news exposes, from really upstanding sources, and the Amish are NOTORIOUS for running puppy mills. and that kind of over-breeding is always a bad idea.
