sure carowinds is great if you have the money..... Try these:
-ImagineOn (it's basically a library for kids downtown, computers for kids, and its free)
-Theres a few of those water park things around town (one off statesville rd, one outside northlake mall, one at latta park near east blvd. those are the only ones i remember)
-Reedy Creek Park is fun and they have a free nature museum in the back, plenty of hiking trails, a couple of lakes
-Nature Museum at Freedom Park (but its 5 dollars per person)
-Monkey Joes: My FAVORITE! A very large room filled with moonwalks and inflatable playgrounds and slides and whatnot. Just found this place a couple weeks ago and even tho its about $10 on weekends/ $7 on a weekday, the pass is good all day so you can leave for lunch and come back later, plus parents are free and can play with the kids if they want. One on South Blvd in Pineville, one on Independence Blvd in Matthews
-Movies 10 in Matthews: 50 cent movies on Mondays for groups of 3 or more (so, 3 people would cost $1.50), $1 Tuesdays, $1.50 general admission except on weekends. Fairly new movies that just left regular movie theaters. I just took my son and nephew to see Spider Man 3. Pretty cheap, just a long drive. I think theres another one in Gastonia or someplace.
-Freedom Park hosts free outdoor movies once a month. Theres a movie theatre with FREE movies for kids at Ayrsley Place on South Tryon near the Steele Creek area on tuesdays/thursdays
thats about all i can think of. hope i helped ya out

Check to see if they have a Children's museum. The one in Seattle is great. Also, trips to a regular museum to see dinosaurs would be a hit, park, zoo, etc.
