The Self is real; everything else may indeed be illusion. It resides only lightly in the brain and the rest of the human body, but can leave it for short periods and still come back, or leave it for good if the body is worn out or damaged beyond repair.

In some sense, this is the human soul we are talking about, although I believe it exists in a higher plane where it inhabits and/or controls and/or possesses quite a few bodies at a time. Or across or beyond time. And at higher levels still, is identical to the One: the "I am that I am."
