anything but dinner and a movie - take her somewhere where you have to interact - coffee, book store, bar, whatever - this is the first chance you are going to have to show him/her that you have a brain, that you are intelligent and that you can carry on a conversation - listen closely, look them in the eye and be yourself - too many people try to put their best foot forward in the beginning and later down the road, you will eventually be what you are trying to hide - be yourself - good luck

Take your date to a Barnes and Noble. You both can buy a book together and hang out in the Starbucks coffee area.
If that doesn't work, try a park, or somewhere quiet and romantic with lots of scenery.
If your date loves reading books, and if they like the Harry Potter series, you can also try a date to see the new Harry Potter movie. (Edit: Now that I think about this and look at an answer below me, maybe movies ARE a bad thing for a first date, at least, when you aren't in your teens anymore. Well, here's a second date idea? lol)
I hope these ideas help a little.

Definitely keep it personal. Gear the date to her interests, and research the subject before hand. So if shes in to art take her to a gallery walk through a few days before hand and ask the curator a lot of questions, that way you have something to discuss on the date during the awkward periods. Coffee houses are a nice start or end to the date, as a start you can talk about what you had planned and see if she is interested. Always make sure you have a plan B and C that way if she looks bored you have a fall back. Its always nice to put some effort in to your planning, be prepared.

Movies are the absolute worst thing you can do for a first date. (unless you are in your teens) Women think it is so impersonal, and you learn hardly anything about your date making future dates hard to plan. You say she likes to read. hmmm. If you live in a scenic fair weathered area near a starbucks try walking to a starbucks with her and then getting a coffe and sitting by a nice spot to read and then walking back. it may seem dumb, but she will love the oppurtunity to do something she loves, learn about you, and get a workout in all at the same time. Good luck with your sweet. =D

Try a book fair, or a large bookstore with a cafe, you can spend time browsing and talking about authors & subjects you like. Then after browsing sit down and have coffee, you'll be surprised where your conversation could lead, through a common interest you could learn a great deal about each other.
Its all about making the other person feel comfortable & at ease/

Since your date loves reading books you could take her to a book store with a cafe in it have coffee and look at books and maybe buy one for her. Or sit together and look through books. other ideas are mini golfing, movies is always an option. Since she likes to read maybe take her to see the latest harry potter movie. Hope i helped.

Have you ever seen The Science of Love? It's very interesting. It's on tonight - NBC I think. The best first date ideas involve stuff that gets the mind and heart racing - romantic settings, something risk taking or competetive (bungee jumping or bumper cars) etc.
Do NOT take your date somewhere that has to do with reading. She/he does that on their own time! Do something different!

well, i don't think there's many first dates for a book lover, besides buying books. but you could go to the bowling allies, movies, skating(if you live near by a skating rink)
