You can buy this rack thing to hang them from and it slows down the ripening process. You can find one at walmart or bed bath and beyond.

Take them out of the bag they were in because they are each giving off ethylene gas and ripening each other. Keep them away from apples for the same reason - avoiding that gas.

When you are at the store, open the bag and take out a few very green ones. Open another bag and take out some partially green ones. Open a third bag and take out a couple of yellow ones. Now take that collection home and keep them separated. They will ripen over a week. Don't put them in the freezer if you want them to ripen at all without getting brown.

If some get overripe cut them up into chunks and put into a plastic bag in the freezer. When you want a smoothie or a banana-frozen-popsicle use them right from the freezer.

Bananas should be stored at room temperature, ideally between 55 and 75 degrees. However, in the summertime bananas can ripen quickly at home unless the house is kept below 75 degrees.
Once ripened, they'll keep a maximum of two days before decay begins. If you wish to keep bananas from ripening any further, store them in the refrigerator. Expect the skin to turn dark brown. The flesh will remain firm and white for a couple of days though the flavor may be affected somewhat.

When keeping bananas at room temperature, be sure they aren't stored too closely to other fruits. The ethylene gas released by bananas could alter the ripening of the other fruits.

Beleive it or not, YOU CAN FREEZE Bananas! Keep the peels on to prevent freezer burn. Yes the hanging method is effective but a combination of dark, cold, and hanging is the best. Not many have the freezer space to acomplish it, so probally not worth the effort to many people.
By the way, I own a resturant where I make fruit shakes as part of my menu. I tried peeling, cutting the bananas, and freezing in tupperware...they still turn brown.

Yes, I agree with the other lady's answer. It's called a banana hanger. They are anywhere from $3 to $8 at Wal-Mart or other places like that. But when they do over-ripen.. you can make some fantastic banana bread. Just search for the recipe online at Allrecipes.com if you're interested.

In the fridge the skin will brown much faster but the fruit actually stays firmer longer.

They will stay fresher in the fridge, even though the skin will brown faster.
A brown skin is not a sign of rot, unless they are really old.
If they get too soft they can be used mashed in sandwiches or in cooking.

The refrigerator will slow the ripening technique... possibly you may separate the bunch and shop some interior the refrigerator and a pair on the counter. Heck, if this would not artwork you may constantly make some yummy banana bread with the brown ones!!
