Judeo-Christian tradition has taught for thousands of years that it is God's will that:
+ Single people should be celibate.
+ Married people should be faithful to each other (adultery is wrong).

The Catholic Church recognizes the power of sex when it teaches, "Sexuality affects all aspects of the human person in the unity of his body and soul."

Chastity means the successful integration of sexuality within the person. A chaste person's body and spirit lives in unity and opposes any behavior that would impair that unity.

The purpose of sex is to bring a husband and wife closer and to create human life.

Fornication, sex between an unmarried man and an unmarried woman, is contrary to their human dignity and the dignity of human sexuality.

For more information, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church, section 2337 and following: http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text/pt3sect2chpt2art6.htm#2337

With love in Christ.

I'm not Catholic, but if I may still answer: It is because premarital sex is a type of "fornication"

Fornication includes pre-marital sex, extra-marital sex/adultery, homosexuality and any other sexual perversion outside of the marriage covenant.

The other thing we need to remember about sex is: It is in actual fact "equivalent to a blood covenant" between a man and his wife - Because under ideal circumstances, the woman would be virgin and therefor as husband and wife "become one" the hymen is tore and the woman bleeds a little.
Sex is a sacred part of a relationship between husband and wife.

gen 2:24 - therefore a man leaves his mother and father and claeves to his wife, and they become one union.
all human generations proceed from this union - procreation of life.
Mt 5:27-28 & Mt. 19:6 you have heard it was said: "you shall not commit adultry." but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust in his heart had already committed adultry with her in his heart. What God has joined let no man put asunder.

we are taught to resist temptations - this includes temptations of the flesh. there is a time and a place for sex and God deemed it was within the bounds of marriage.
in Gal 5:22,23 we are taught about self control.
in 1 John 3 we are taught that there will be those who desire to live of their own accord and not of God's self temperance is one of this losses.
and let us not forget 1 Cor 7:15-19 - (synopsis) Our bodies are members of Christ? when you prostitute your body you are not becoming one flesh you are only pleasuring your own flesh. you are committing a sin against your own body. God has granted us this body in which He resides and we are o glorift God with our bodies. when we have sex outside of the marriage as God described, we are not acting in Communion with His teachings.

it is a sin to yourself because you should know by now that pre marital sex is not good for any one's health... you might get a desease that is uncurable... you should know that...or you are just ignoring it...
