I've noticed on a lot of tackle the lead warning on the label. I never see anyone using any precaution when I'm out fishing. Should I be wearing gloves and washing my hands? Is this something most anglers take seriously? The labels say lead has been known to cause cancer in testing done in Calif.

no, not to worry. the EPA along with several anit hunting and fishing groups have gone nuts over lead. Just like the federal government banning lead shot from all federal hunting preserves. The reason? they say that fish eat the lead shot, eagles eat the fish and die. Guess what? never been a proven case of an eagle dying from lead poisoning. Now, at the same time, yes, lead can be toxic if ingested in high enough amounts. More people have been poisoned by the old lead based house paint, than will ever be poisoned by handling lead sinkers etc.

I'm thinkin living in California causes cancer. That being said. Lead is bad for you. You don't want to eat it or breath lead dust or eat lead based paint. Canada is outlawing all lead based fishing tackle. (there are a lot of similarities between Canada and California. No?) So I guess it's bad for the environment. They are pushing the tungsten and other types of metals over the lead.
I will say I did give up closing split shot with my teeth. Other than that I use lead for the most part.
Tungsten is good on carolina rigs when you are trying to make a little noise. I imagine I will switch to "other" metals for weights and jigheads eventually. Like when they take the lead off the market. I would'nt worry about it unless you plan to eat it. Or feed it to your kids.

Another label you will see is on fishing reels. They contain petroleum based lubricants which are known to cause cancer in Californian lab rats. I am uncertain at which dosage this becomes a factor in human beings. Washing your hands after handling these products is recommended (cleanliness is next to Godliness!) and probably not a bad idea. Given time and enough research dollars, CA scientist will discover that life causes death!
