My Australian Shepherd female really cut her paw pads up badly during a trail ride in the mountains this weekend and can barely walk. I've been opening a vitamin E capsule and putting the oil on her pads, but don't know what else I can do to help her.

I would be going with something heavier than vitamin E. Antibacterial cream/ointment for example. Also, you should put socks or boots on her feet...especially right after applying anything topical to her feet. Keep her mouth off of her feet as much as possible. Keep a close eye on her and if her feet start to look worse or don't start to look better in a week or so then you need to take her to the vet.

If you plan on making similar trail rides a regular thing it may be worth your time and money to invest in a really good pair of dog boots, like ruffwear's Bark'n Boots Grip Tex boots. A friend of mine has a dog with very sensitive pads who cuts them on ice without fail if he isn't wearing boots. She's been very pleased with how well these boots fit and stay on her dog even when running through the woods or deep snow drifts and she hasn't had to take him to the vet for paw lacerations since she got them.

Go to a petstore and but her booties, they sell some that velcro and are light weight. Apply neosporine and keep them dry. Or call your vet and get cream from them. You could also give asprin for the pain. over 50lbs give 1 reg. strength asprin 2x a day, or under 50lbs, 1/2 a tab 2x a day.

Antibiotic ointment and thick bandages to protect, cage rest. If they are that bad, she should be seen by the vet for oral antibiotics and pain medication as well.

Please take her to the vet. The vet needs to look at her paws and treat her for her wounds. There could be infection.

I'd recommend a vet visit. They could get infected and such. Plus, since she can't walk well on them, they're probably pretty painful. Please take her to the vet.
