It is safe to bike as far as you want. Twenty miles isn't alot, unless you're way out of shape. Riders in the Tour de France ride over 100 miles a day for 3 weeks with only 2 days off. You can bike as far as you want as long as its in your ability. And if you bike a bit much one day you'l;l be sore the next. So there's no real issue with how far to bike. Bike until you feel like stopping or there is a cause for you to stop, i.e.: an injury. Have fun.

It all depends on who you are, how long you've been cycling and your level of fitness etc...if these are non-cyclists telling you this, then their perspective may not be very helpful. Doing 20 miles a week is nothing, doing 20 miles at a time is pretty decent, but depending on how often you do it, 20 miles a day for some people can be too much, but if you're not in pain or extremely fatigued after 20 miles, then it should be fine. There's no limit to how many miles you can safely ride, as long as you are intelligent about it.

The general rule is to not increase your weekly mileage more than 10-15%.

Good luck and keep cycling!!

It's not the distance, but the trail that is difficult or easy. It's different 20 miles on level paved road than 20 miles of uphill on a steep, rocky ground.

Probably the people that tell you that 20 miles is too much are people that don't ride. There are some trails that are like 25 to 30 miles that are easy and fun, and some that are like 10 or 15 but pretty exausting, but fun!

I think it's safe to ride as long as you feel good and stay hydrated.

Whether it's riding the roads or riding the mountains, the distance you travel is completely up to you and your physical limitations.

A good hard day on the mountains is usually 15-20 miles for me, and I'm looking to do my first 30 miler this weekend. I've only been biking for a little under 2 months, and I try to do a little more each time.

I say happy riding to you, and ride til you're tired!
