Yes, you have to ask a pro, as the others said. Because a painting is not worth because of who paints it, but because of it's artistic / aesthetic values. Which can vary depending on the artist.
I.e. not all the Francis Bacons are worth the same, some important works might be more expensive.

Wow! do you own one? Last year, one of her best known paintings picture Sugaring Off - which is also a winter scene painting (showing country folk celebrating the annual tapping of syrup from maple trees) - was sold for $1,360,000, an auction record for the artist.

i gather if it takes a pro to know...then it should be just as enjoyable to the viewer...but i think the original is worth so much more to people because they have the knowledge that the artist actually stood right there and created it...they have the artist as well as the painting....bragging rights i guess. i work around original remingtons and russells occasionally...there is a certain feel around them...it's kind of an honor to be that close to a real masterpiece. i doubt that many people would go to a gallery that advertised..."just as good as the original ones!"

You need to have it authenticated. Sotheby's in NY 212-606-7000 can tell you about it if you send a photo. Ask for the American Painting Dept.

You'll need to contact a reputable art appraiser. Here are a couple to begin with:
http://www.chicagoappraisers.com/
http://www.appraisers.org/
http://www.appraisersassoc.org/
They will need to see the artwork to verify that it's an original and make an accurate appraisal.
