I agree. Alone, we are weak and pitiful and can do nothing to save ourselves. So in that case we are handicapped and we need Jesus to save us and help us and give us the strength to endure through temptation. So I think that when they say that Chrisitianity is a crutch, they are right. And thank the Lord that I have my crutch, because now I can stand.
How can you say that God watches us suffer and does nothing about it? If you have not put your faith in God then why is it that you blame him for not helping you? You do not want his help. You state that clearly by denying his love and power. Malachi 3:3 "He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver."
A silver refiner must hold the silver over a burning flame refine it- remove the impurities. He must stay in front of the fire the entire time and throughout he cannot take his eyes off the silver because if he leaves it a second too long than the piece will be ruined. But if not left long enough then it wil never be refined completely. "He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver."

Crutches and supports are accepted but not necessarily wanted or appreciated means of help in our existence. Most times, they are considered a "necessary evil".
Jesus Christ is sooooo much more. He is light in the darkness. He is breath, life, our heartbeat. He is our ever-present shelter from the storms. He is our lifeline. Jesus can and will destroy the need for crutches and supports in our life. Jesus is freedom. Jesus is the universal key and answer to any problem or trial we face in this life.

So, to clarify, every junkie needs their junk?
We've got the old "religion is the opiate of the masses" too.
Extending the metaphor: are you sure you've got the right crutch? What if Buddhism is a better crutch for you, but you're unwilling to try because you've become hobbled by the one you're using?
Shouldn't you try walking on your own?

I have a crutch. Instead of relying on religion, I rely on myself and my family--the only things that matter in this life.
I take more comfort in all people are imperfect and we were all made by chance, rather than a magic, perfect being in the sky who created us only to watch us suffer and do nothing about it.

No, I don't need a crutch for my spiritual or moral life anymore than I need a crutch to walk around.
I am strong enough to face my problems without running to Cosmic Daddy for help.

I don't have a problem with YOU needing GOD, but don't think EVERYONE else does.
