I really REALLY need to gain weight and I've heard that working out helps because you gain muscle weight. My mom says if you start working out too young you'll become short..or something..I'm 14, by the way.

the only bad exercise is the one that is performed improperly. there is absolutely zero medical data that supports statements that resistance training stunts the growth of the human skeletal system.

14 is not too young to start resistance training. focus on compound exercises and on perfecting your form and moving the weight with the target muscles.

no, unless you want to get very serious about body building and lift very, very, very heavy weights. Then it can hurt your spine and possibly stunt your growth, but I doubt you'll be lifting hundreds of pounds. sou should be ok, as long as you take it easy in the beginning. Make sure you talk to a real fitness instructor before you start using weights or weight machine. Not only they'll be able to customize a workout plan for you, they'll be able to show you how to do all the exercises right. If you're a beginner, and especially if you're on the short or on the tall side, you can pull a muscle if you don't use the weights right.
Talking to an instructor and a doctor should also appease your mom.

No, you can work out safely at 14, but you have to take into consideration that the bodies bones are still growing, so I wouldn't go heavy. And also correct form is essential. and I would do it under the supervision of a trainer, or a training staff of a sports team, or the very least someone older than you who knows what they're doing.

Whaaa? No, you won't get short if you work out. Kids always run around and "work out" without even knowing it.

I think your mother may be referring to gymnastics and jumps that put pressure on the joints. I'm not sure if that is even true. I heard that gymnasts aren't short because they do gymnastics, it's just the short girls are naturally better at tumbling because they have a lower center of gravity. Correct me if I'm wrong.

your mothers is probably referring to becoming muscel bound, which is an out-dated idea that putting on muscel will restrict movement and growth. with proper stretching and such, there is absolutely no risk of that whatsoever. i don't think 14 is too young to begin a weightlifting regime. just don't go overboard or anything - everthing in moderation. also, make sure you are well informed as to proper form and all that so you can be as safe as possible!

14 is not too young to work out. But doing it safely is very important. Talk to your school's gym teacher or an adult you know who works out and find out what is the safest way to bulk up!
They could also help you figure out a safe diet that will help you put on some pounds.

I've never heard of that before. If that was the case you wouldn't have gym class or weight training, ect. Exercise at any age is good.
