Teach my dog to swim without me pushing him in myself? Because he knows how to swim but how can I teach him to get in the pool by himself?

Some dogs just don't like water! My All American would only come into the lake if I pretended to be drowning or in trouble!!! I have 4 Goldens now that I can't keep out of the water. But, 1 of my puppies was very apprehensive about getting into the pool. I took her out for 1 on 1 time and just lifted her into the pool very gently and then just walked around holding her and talking calmly to her. Eventually I let her swim to the ladder and then threw her toy into the pool and let her jump in after it.

If that doesn't work I would take him/her to a lake where they can walk into the water as opposed to jumping in and not being able to touch bottom. This way they can build some confidence first and determine if they like it on not.

Good luck!!

If there are any other dogs in the neighborhood that also like to swim that might help him.

My black labradorable loves the ocean and went right in a t 5 months of age. The pool was another story, our neighbor has a golden retriever that loves the pool. Their dog jumped in and out until our followed. We went in the pool with him until he got used to it. Now he doesn't want to come out of the water.

Most dogs already have a swimming instinct. But if he's small enough, you could carry him in and stay beside him as he swims, until he is used to the water.

If he's a larger breed such as a lab, he probably has a fetching instinct. So throw something in the water for him to fetch. And praise him when he does.

Good luck!

You shouldn't make him get in the pool unless he wants to. Some dogs love water, others don't. I wouldn't recommend pushing your dog in. That way they will associate the pool with being freaked out. Let them come in if they are comfortable. Other wise, stop trying to make them do something they don't want to.

My dogs stay outside with me while I swim or float around in the pool. They tend to get hot so they actually get in because they're overheating. I know, cruel way to convince them to get in, but it works

a lot of bully or really muscular dogs are not good at swimming so your dog may just be uncomfortable and scared-- he will eventually get in if he wants to

go in first yourself, or even take him in with you and have treats at the ready!! make sure u train him where he can get out by himself. If there arent adequate exits for him, purchase one of those ramps, etc. before u begin training. If he can't get out....... don't train him to get in.. too dangerous.

good luck.
