Relax. My dad says they had it in for Harvey comics in the '60's. They published Wendy the Good Witch,Caspar the Friendly Ghost and (worst!) Hot Stuff.Dad still has his whole collection.
Why are atheists so obsessed with fundies? Why would you care if they do or do not like books for kids that have magic stuff in them? So they don't like them, and? What's your point? Are you folks all just a'cravin' the approval of fundies? I'm a Catholic and I couldn't care less what they think. As far as being good copy, that they are,but this stuff comes and goes. Nobody even remembers the stink they made about Hot Stuff. What's your issue on this one/ You think they're obligated to like some kid's book? Why? They like it or not, just like you.

I'm comfortable being a hard A**ed Lutheran, but I like Harry Potter movies (never read the books). Our Pastor doesn't mind Harry Potter, he reads his daughter "But Wars books", he laughs at Monty Python, and enjoys a good whiskey, but hates Bourbon just like me.
We are content and at peace.
The fundies can go pound salt.
Mark.

Lol, they had a thing against Hot Stuff? My dad has a Hot Stuff tattoo. ;)
Personally, I don't care if fundies don't want to read Harry Potter. I think it's silly, but it's their choice what they want to read. HOWEVER, I do get annoyed when fundies try to ban the HP books, saying that they're promoting witchcraft and whatnot. Fact of the matter is, kids LOVE Harry Potter, and will continue to read the books for hundreds of years. Before Harry Potter, it was very uncool to read--but I see kids in school toting the HP books around without any fear of looking "geeky".
They can hate the books all they want--but if they try to take them out of school libraries, then they can stuff their Bible where the sun don't shine.
Edit: Yes, it's true. Laura Mallory from Georgia is one of the most militant examples I've seen, who's been trying to ban the HP books, saying they promote evil behavior and witchcraft (despite never reading the books). She has fought, and lost, several court cases over this issue. Heres a link to an article about her: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15127464

I'm not an atheist. I am Wiccan. My vexation with fundies and their attack on Harry Potter is their deep seated belief that I actually believe in that crap. While it is a great story, good special effects, etc, my issue is that any self respecting witch doesn't think they can open a lock by waving a wand, grow gills by eating seaweed, or fly with the right broom.
If a fundie, or anyone else, wants to take issue with Harry Potter based on the fact that it is a fiction book that they don't approve of, fine. But stop pointing at it and saying "See, and this is why witchcraft is bad and evil". Get a life people.

I don't care if fundies think Harry Potter is evil. I have read all the books and loved them. What I do care about is how a crazed vocal few have gotten many more people all worked up over these books. Parents all over the country are wasting time and money to have these books removed from public libraries and schools. It is censorship plain and simple.
Believe what you want, just keep it to yourself.
EDIT
Yes, it is true. The Harry Potter books top the list of the most challenged books in libraries around the country.
I have sent links to the most recent case, this year.

I am a devout Christian, but I am not religious. There is a big difference. I read Harry Potter and so do my kids, because I know they are smart enough to understand that Harry Potter is fictional. All the crap that fundamentalists have made up about Harry Potter is untrue and if they would just do some fair and objective research they would find that out. I find it funny that atheists like to make fun of some of us for our views, but it doesn't deter me since I know that most fundamentalists are not as close to God as they claim, and so the atheists' attacks are pointless. Religious tradition does not equal a true relationship with Jesus Christ....

I could care less what fundies think about Harry Potter so long as they aren't being idiots and burning books in fires, and they don't expect that the rest of us not read them. They can do whatever they want.
Edit: No, its not ok. The fundies need to butt out of everyone elses lives. When they do that, THEN it will be ok.

Have you ever had a fundie in your family? I do and I've had to pretty much stop ever seeing him except when absolutely necessary. It's not easy doing that to your one and only brother (especially when you have no other siblings). One of the few times my brother and his family came to my house my sister in law flipped out because my one year old niece pulled one of the Harry Potter books out of the book shelves. She actually had the nerve to yell at me in my own house and accuse me of "corrupting her child". I told her then and there to move her carcass on out.
My brother is the only one in the family that constantly pressures me to convert back to christianity (not that I was every really one to begin with - it was a name only thing) and goes to the trouble of giving me a church approved list every three months of what I can and cannot give his daughters for gifts. Pretty much everything a kid could enjoy is on it.
I think any book that pulls a kid away from the x-box, PlayStation etc is a good book because kids just don't read anymore. If it isn't digitalized they don't want it. The Harry Potter books are interesting enough for kids actually want to read them; that can never be bad.

The problem(s) that I have with them are that they are living in a fantasy world and do not have the mental capacity to realize how ignorant that they really are being. Granted it may not work to point out to an idiot that they are being an idiot, you just hope that maybe it would help and shake them out of the fantasy world that they live in. My concern is that they are the same type of people who would push and push and push for the government to ban the book from stores, etc. regardless of what people want. It is the same thing back in the past when religious groups of mental midgets forced prohibition, regardless of what people wanted. They can only think about themselves and do not care about anyone else or the negative impact that they have on others. And that the rest of us want to live our lives our way and for them to stay out.

Why would anyone care if they like or dislike Harry Potter. I am not an Atheists, but I am not Christian either.
If they do not like the book that is fine they don't have to read it.
Just do not interfere with my right and everyone Else's right to read it.
That is my only concern.
Peace to all

Christians are always telling us about how god gave us free will, and then his followers are constantly trying to take it away. I like Harry Potter, and I like hundreds perhaps thousands of things they consider to be sins. I don't object to them not reading the books, it's when they try to make them into some kind of source of evil, that pisses me off.
If you don't like it don't do it, but give everyone else a break.
