Congratulations! You are lucky to even have an engagement ring if you are concerned that it is real or not. Engagement rings or wedding rings can be colored. I have seen many people these days opt for favorite colored stones vs. the traditional diamond or bands. There is no right or wrong answer when a couple professes their comittment to each other.
If you are not satisfied with your ring, talk to him about the kind of wedding ring you hope to have one day. Some women do not 'earn' (using this loosely... don't take it the wrong way!) a fabulous ring until anniversaries down the road. I do not know your economic situation, but you two need to discuss your wants and desires with each other, not on the internet.
Is your argument going to be, "Everyone on the internet says you gave me a fake stone, so that is tacky." How will that make him feel that you can't form your own opinion or discussion about it?
I apologize, I am totally sure you must have meant to word your question differently. I got reamed when I asked a question that didn't give enough information!

There are different colors of diamonds. A good jeweler could tell you if it's a real stone. But honestly, is that the point here? Are you seriously going to say no over the ring?
Wear the ring to wal-mart, take a look at their crap, cheap ear rings. The ones with the huge, fake stones in them. Compare the sparkle of those to your ring. If your ring is much better than those, then at the very least, it's a good quality cubic. Essentially a cubic zirconia is a synthetic diamond.
But again, I gotta ask. Would the ring being fake really be a deal breaker?

I was really into diamonds before I saw this Discovery Channel special on the diamond mines. It's practically a slave trade in Africa. That really turned me off, now I'd rather have pearl or just a plain band - I got rid of mine and got a silver band. You are young and money will be tight, we are going to buy each other more expensive bands on our ten year. I think when we get our rings we all secretly wonder "Is this real?" But no matter if it is or isn't the important part is is that this man loves you enough to want to dedicate the REST OF HIS LIFE to you and that is way more precious than diamonds. Good lick on your engagement.

There are lots of different colors of diamonds, or it could be a totally different gemstone all together.
I personally wouldnt lie to your fiance or go behind his back as if you dont trust him, thats not the best idea. I would tell him that you are taking it to be appraised and then go get it appraised, you should do that anyway for insurance purposes and he shouldnt object, if he does then I would be doubly wary of him as well as the ring. But getting an appraisal will tell you what the ring is and its specs, and will also be a smart move for protecting it in case of theft or loss.

How sad. How truely sad.
Just take it to the jewellers and get them
to check for you if it is really that important.
I pity your poor boyfriend. Chances are
it is real and he spent a lot of cash on it. But that
is besides the point. He proposed to you
and it is supposed to mean so very much to
you, but all you care about is that he might have
given you a fake ring.
You should of said no.
You are obviously not ready for marriage.

Sounds like you do not trust him and really shocked by his ring choice.
If you are suspicious you may as well not get married, why get married to someone who you suspect is trying to pull one over on you.
If you are right than you shouldn't get married, if you are wrong he deserves someone who trusts him. Either way it doesn't look good.
Did you ever think of asking him what the colored stone was ? He may have bought you a sapphire, and more rare than white diamonds, are fancy color diamonds.
A relationship is about communication.

I heard that fake diamonds are invisible if you drop them in a glass of water, but real diamonds look the same as they do out of the glass...might want to check into this more though...I'm blond and get my facts mixed up sometimes....
AND....WHAT???? Ummmm...you should be estatic about the engagement, not worried about the stone!!! Your poor boyfriend....

You just got engaged, and are worrying about the authenticity of your ring?! GROW UP!
You have some serious trust issues, and I'm not sure you should be getting married.

An engagement ring isn't supposed to be any one style...that's between you and your bf. If you want to know if it's real, take it down to a jeweler and they can appraise it or just simply tell you if it's real or not.
