The previous answer is about right on. I have lived in Belize about two years and travel to Belize City on a regular basis. I try to stay to areas of the city that I am familiar with, keep to places that have a decent amount of people, and do not travel around the city much at night. Use common sense and you should be fine.

I have wandered all over Belize CIty without problems. There are bad people everywhere but they are predominately very friendly and accomidating.
You might as well ask if New York, Paris, London, LA, Bangkok, Amsterdam or any other city is safe. There are good and bad parts, but usually if you feel uncomfortable in a situation you are reading the landscape correctly. Just keep your eyes open and have fun

It is not bad, you have to be careful no matter where you go. Belize is really nice and the water is really pretty there. I have not ever felt scared there. I have been there three times. Just be careful and use your head.
