The only differences is the approach to what the Buddha said as it appeals to the individual. I like Tibetan Buddhism, Joe Shmoe might like Zen... we're both on the same kind of path, just different "boats" for getting there.

Zen is for upscale suburban professionals. The garden variety is for illiterate peasants in underdeveloped nations. It gets them to give 90% of their earning to monks. It's a major source of poverty in Asia.
