Is it normal for a cat to sheed a lot.. like handfulls of hair when you pet them?

If it's a longhaired cat, yes, it's totally normal, especially if it hasn't been groomed for some time.

At the height of summer? Oh yes. The hotter it is, the more they shed till their winter coat is gone.

It helps to brush them every day or every other day, to help get a lot of it off before they ingest it with their own grooming. That makes less coming up as a hairball and less likelyhood of constipation at the other end.

Sometimes if you don't brush them regularly. Just keep up with the grooming to help out with it. Now if the hair is coming off and leaving bald spots, that might be something else that needs to be checked up on.

If it is a long haired cat, yes. You need to brush the cat a lot and try cat vitamins.
