I know about this really great gel that is used to reduce hairballs in cats, it's called Petromalt, it comes in a variety of flavors and you should be able to get it at your pet store, or even online (amazon.com sells it for instance) it comes in various flavors and I'm sure your cat will love it and so will you (if you know what I mean).
Best of luck to you and your cat!

A little vasoline on the paw two or three times a week can help slide things through. It won't hurt him, and the lubrication doesn't digest, it goes through the system and comes out the other end.
Brush him every day to help reduce the amount of fur he's going to swallow, and see if you can get him to drink some more water too, that will help.

Buy cat food that has hairball remedy included in the food. That should solve the problem.
