I will be moving my family, and will be traveling from NY thru Canada and into Michigan.

I have a current valid US Army military ID, my Wife and eldest daughter have Dependant ID cards. My wife and all 3 of my children have -expired- US passports.

I have birth certificates, and social security cards for everyone.

Do I need anything else?

Also I have a dog and a cat. I have current rabies certificate for both. Do I need anything else with the animals?

Thanks!

You should be okay with all of that. You have satisfied the citizenship requirement (birth certificates) and valid government issued photo ID (dependant ID cards I believe have pics on them)

The animals if they are over 3 months need the rabies certificates. Just to be sure, see if your vet will give you current good health certificates with both animals descriptions. (not nec. according to the border websites, but always a good idea) Remember to also bring current photos of the pets with you, and never let them out without leashes. (many go missing) A temporary phone number for their ID chips or tags is also a good idea.

Have a good trip!

As far as your family goes, you have all the documentation that you need. The passports are useless since they have expired, but the birth certificates and dependent Id's will be fine.

As far as the animals - you should make sure you have a complete set of the vaccination records and you will be OK.

Yes, they will. Passports are not needed to drive to and from Canada until an. 2008 at the earliest. See website below to read the law.

I understand that they may have delayed the requirement for a passport, but you should contact Customs (Dept. of Homeland Security) to verify before your trip.
To me, it sounds like you have enough, but you would hate to be stuck or be forced into the "long line" at the border.

They should also be able to tell you what you need for the animals.

The United States REQUIRES that you have a passport now when coming back into the US. Passports for each person. And your pets? Make sure everything is up to date with there shots and have the papers handy in the car if they ask for them.
